The University of Melbourne Student Associations are at the centre of student life. The Student Associations represent and support all students and create engagement opportunities that contribute to the University’s vibrant community.

There are also numerous student clubs and societies offering opportunities for you to develop socially, culturally, professionally, spiritually and academically.

Student Life supports and enables participation in a wide variety of sporting, social and cultural pursuits. You can get involved in social sporting competitions, club sport or intervarsity events such as the UniSport Nationals.

There is a lot to explore and discover when first arriving on campus. Orientation, sometimes known as ‘O Week’, will not only help you find your away around the University, but also help you meet new people and learn more about life in Sydney or Perth. Orientation Week starts one week before classes commence and attendance is compulsory for all international students, including Study Abroad and Exchange students.

To help you as an international student, The University of Melbourne will link you with an experienced student mentor who will meet with you regularly. Your mentor will also provide you with relevant information to assist your transition into university life in Australia. You will learn how to access services, information and events to maximise your opportunities and make the best of student life at Notre Dame University.

Melbourne is a global city, known for its multicultural atmosphere, diverse communities, and excellent infrastructure. With thousands of international students, you’ll find plenty of student-focused cafes, cultural events, student meet-ups, and affordable housing options. Excellent public transport (trams, trains, and buses) makes commuting from any part of the city to The University of Melbourne easy. Choices range from shared apartments, student hostels, and private apartments near Carlton, Parkville, or the city center. Explore Federation Square, Royal Botanic Gardens, or Queen Victoria Market for a taste of local life. Students can also take advantage of discounted entry fees for museums and cultural events. Rent in the city typically ranges from $400 to $800 per week for shared apartments or student accommodation.

Southbank is a short tram ride (10-15 minutes) from The University of Melbourne. Known for its upscale apartment complexes, Southbank offers a more modern, sophisticated lifestyle with views of the Yarra River and easy access to the Melbourne Arts Precinct (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Theatre Company). Being close to Melbourne’s cultural hub means you’ll have quick access to live music, theater performances, and other arts events. More expensive than outer suburbs. Expect to pay around $600 to $1,200+ per week for accommodation. You can enjoy riverside cafes, bars, and the Crown Casino complex for entertainment. Southbank also has great connections for nightlife and cultural activities. Higher living costs compared to the inner suburbs, with rent around $600 to $1,200+ per week.

It is a is a residential area located about 5-10 km from the University. It offers a quieter, more suburban feel compared to central Melbourne. It’s well-served by trains and trams, and it’s a 15-20-minute ride to the university. Burnley is generally more affordable than Southbank but still offers a safe, quiet environment for students. Mostly shared houses, apartments, and a few student accommodations. Rent ranges from $400 to $700 per week. The suburb is known for its parks, green spaces, and proximity to Richmond, a lively area full of cafes, shops, and eateries.

Dookie is a rural suburb located about 150 km north of Melbourne. It offers a quiet, relaxed lifestyle, which is ideal for students who prefer a slower pace. The Dookie campus of The University of Melbourne focuses on agriculture, food, and wine sciences, making it ideal for students in these fields. Rent here is much more affordable, ranging from $150 to $400 per week, with options in student halls or private rental homes. Dookie is more isolated than the city but has a close-knit community, so you’ll find opportunities to connect with other students in the university. If you need to travel to the city, trains and buses are available, though you’ll spend a few hours traveling to Melbourne.

Located about 120 km northwest of Melbourne, Creswick offers a peaceful, rural environment, ideal for students enrolled in specific university programs such as agriculture or environmental science. Rent is more affordable here, ranging from $150 to $350 per week. Similar to Dookie, Creswick campus focuses on environmental sciences and agriculture. It’s perfect if you enjoy a rural lifestyle and are focused on outdoor studies. You can expect longer travel times to Melbourne for city activities (about 1.5 hours by car/train). Creswick has a small-town charm, but with fewer amenities than Melbourne or other larger suburbs.

It is located about 30-40 km west of Melbourne, with 1-1.5 hour commute to the university (via train or bus). Werribee is known for being more affordable than inner suburbs of Melbourne, with rent ranging from $350 to $700 for shared apartments or houses. You’re close to Werribee Open Range Zoo and other outdoor attractions like Werribee Park and Point Cook Coastal Park. While Werribee is quieter, it has access to shops, cafes, and basic amenities, and is great for students who prefer a less hectic environment.

Located about 180 km north of Melbourne, Shepparton is a rural area known for agriculture and food science programs at the university. Rent is much cheaper compared to Melbourne, with prices around $150 to $300 per week for students. Shepparton offers a close-knit rural community, and the town has everything you need: shops, cafes, and a more relaxed lifestyle. Travel to Melbourne takes about 2-2.5 hours by bus or car, so you’ll need to plan trips to the city accordingly. Shepparton has a quiet environment, and you’ll likely find a supportive student community in the town, but there’s not much of a nightlife scene compared to the city.
