IELTS General Training Writing Practice Test
Two writing tasks to complete in 60 minutes

General Training Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

In the IELTS General Training Writing test, you are given two tasks to complete within one hour.

  • Task 1: should take you about 20 minutes and requires at least 150 words.
  • Task 2: is longer and should take about 40 minutes.

When you practise, try to do both tasks in one sitting without a break, so it feels like the real test.

Quick reminders for Task 1:

  • Spend no more than 20 minutes.
  • Write at least 150 words.
  • Make sure you organise your letter clearly (introduction, body, closing).
  • Keep your tone (formal/informal) appropriate for who you're writing to.

Task 1 – Write about the following topic:

You recently attended a local community event (such as a fair, festival, or exhibition) and were very pleased with how it was organised. Write a letter to the event organiser.

In your letter:

  • Express your appreciation for the event,
  • Mention two things you especially enjoyed,
  • Suggest one improvement for future events.

👉 Begin your letter like this:

Dear [Event Organiser],

Dear Event Organiser,

I am writing to thank you for organising the Riverside Food and Culture Festival last weekend. It was one of the most enjoyable community events I have attended in years, and I really appreciate the effort you and your team put into making it a success.

I particularly enjoyed the live music performances, which created a lively atmosphere throughout the day. The variety of international food stalls was also impressive, allowing people to experience cuisines from many different cultures without leaving our town. Both of these features made the event memorable and brought the community together.

One suggestion I have for future festivals is to provide a shaded seating area. While there were plenty of food options, many people had difficulty finding a comfortable place to sit and eat, especially in the heat of the afternoon. A simple tent or a few covered benches would make a big difference.

Thank you again for your excellent work. I look forward to attending more of your events in the future.

Yours sincerely,
[Your Name]
